For over 55 years, Tower of Power has been delivering the best in funk and soul. Originally formed as The Motowns, the band changed it in 1968 to Tower of Power with a clear vision in mind. Their breakthrough came with East Bay Grease, leading to a deal with Warner Brothers. Their 1972 album Bump City produced hits like “You’re Still a Young Man” and “Down to the Nightclub,” followed by ’70s classics “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?”. Emilio Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968. Decades later, their 2018 50th anniversary show in Oakland was celebrated with the release of 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater. Beyond their own success, Tower of Power has collaborated with legends like Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, Aerosmith, and more. In the process they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown, Detroit, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia. The future of Tower of Power is set out to be vigorous and dynamic, and will prove to be just that for fans around the world starved for the band’s groove just the way Tower of Power likes it!
