October in Williamson County is made for pumpkin patches, warm drinks and finding an excuse to stay outside a little longer. Whether you’re planning around the kids, looking for a fall date or just ready to wear a sweater again, there’s plenty happening all month.
Pick a Pumpkin—or Two
Williamson County has two full pumpkin-patch experiences, and both are worth a visit.
Bandy’s Pumpkin Patch in Johnston City has been a Southern Illinois fall tradition for more than 35 years. Along with pumpkins, you’ll find a 10-acre corn maze, hayrides, a play barn, corn tubs, slides, a mega jump pad and a corn cannon. If you want a little extra challenge, bring a flashlight and try the corn maze after dark.
The Patch on Pittsburg Road in Marion offers U-pick pumpkins and gourds, tractor hayrides, a corn maze, a kids’ play area and Pygmy goats. It’s easy to stop for one pumpkin and end up staying most of the afternoon.
Bring the camera, let the kids choose a pumpkin that’s way too heavy for them to carry and leave some room in the vehicle for mums, gourds and whatever else follows you home.
Pierce Farm in Herrin isn’t a traditional pumpkin patch, but it’s another good fall stop for seasonal flowers, pumpkins, alpacas and farm photos. Fall & Furry Friends takes place October 3. The farm’s Fall Finale & Demonstration Day follows on October 10 with horse-and-wagon rides, vendors and the Urban Legend BBQ food truck.
Grab Something Warm
Fall outings require coffee. That’s just how October works.
Williamson County stops on the 2026 Southern Illinois Coffee Trail include Crown Brew Coffee Co., Guardian Grounds and Velvet Moon Coffee Co. Check the seasonal menu, order whatever sounds good and take it along for the drive.
Not a coffee person? A pastry, doughnut or other sweet treat works just as well. No fall day has ever been ruined by a bakery box in the passenger seat.
Make a Weekend of the Festivals
The Carterville Lions Club Fair runs October 2 and 3 at Cannon Park. October 3 also brings the Fall Flea Market & Yard Sale, Hymns and Harvest, Fall & Furry Friends and Broomsticks & Boards.
October 9–10: Fall Festival, Pierce Farm Fall Finale, Halloween Bash, Not So Scary Trick-or-Treat, Harvest Moon Bluesfest, the KOA Halloween Extravaganza and Fall Produce Dinner.
October 16–17: Halloween Mask Making, Horsepower Halloween Car Show, Witches Night Out, Downtown Marion Fall Festival, Octoberfest Vendor & Craft Show, Bluegill Bay Fall Music Festival and Black Cat Bash.
Choose two or three stops instead of trying to do it all. Browse a market, spend the afternoon downtown and finish with live music. That’s a pretty good fall Saturday.
Halloween Fun With the Kids
Families who prefer candy over jump scares have plenty of choices. Crab Orchard Trunk-or-Treat takes place October 24, followed by Haunted Hollow on October 25 and Hallow-Teen Week on October 29.
You can also visit Jack-O-Lantern Lane in Johnston City throughout October. The free drive-by attraction fills Peterson Avenue with decorated houses, lights and Halloween scenes. Weekend evenings include costumed characters and a few friendly frights.
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, making it easy to turn the celebration into a full day. Pumpkin Path in Downtown Carterville and Trick-or-Treat at the Library are family-friendly choices. The Halloween Hustle and Hope in Motion 5K Fun Run also take place that morning if you’d like to earn the candy before opening the first bag.
A Few Spookier Choices
Amy Bruni: Walking with Ghosts comes to Marion Cultural and Civic Center October 2. Later choices include Witches Night Out, Black Cat Bash and a Halloween Candy Wine Pairing Class.
October 24 brings JunkFest, Halloween Highbanks, Beyond the Bricks and Howl-O-Ween Trivia Night. Then Rocky Horror Show LIVE! takes the stage October 30. Halloween-night options include Halloween at the Cabin and live music at Moonshine Run.
Leave a Little Room in the Schedule
Some of the best October plans don’t have a start time. Take a walk at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, wander through Mandala Gardens or drive the roads around Lake of Egypt as the leaves begin to change.
You don’t have to fit everything into one weekend. You’ve got the whole month to pick a pumpkin, order the fall drink, wear the costume and try something new.
