Friday Evening: Check In & Settle Down
First things first, find somewhere comfortable to stay!
If you’re looking for something a little more private than a traditional hotel, Williamson County has some great cabins and vacation rentals.
Big Tree Little Cabin is a fun option for anyone wanting a peaceful stay surrounded by nature. Dam Near Lake of Egypt Cabins offers modern little cabins close to the lake, while Simple Stays has unique treehouse-style accommodations tucked away in the woods near Marion.
Prefer staying closer to restaurants and shopping? Downtown Marion has several vacation rentals, including The Picket Fence, a charming cottage near Market Street.
Of course, there are also plenty of hotels throughout Marion if you’d rather keep things simple.
Once you’ve unpacked, it’s time to find somewhere good to eat!
Friday Night: Dinner, Drinks & Downtown Marion
Downtown Marion is a great place to start your weekend, especially if you enjoy good food and a little nightlife.
For a nicer dinner, try Seasoning Bistro on the square. It’s a great choice for a date night or an evening out with friends.
If you’re craving a good steak or seafood, 20’s Hideout Steakhouse is another local favorite. For something more casual, you can’t go wrong with Walt’s Pizza, a longtime Marion staple.
After dinner, stick around downtown!
John Brown’s on the Square is a popular stop for drinks and live music, while Little Nashville Cafe & Lounge offers another opportunity to catch local entertainment.
You can also check the schedule at the Marion Cultural & Civic Center. From concerts and theatrical performances to comedians and special events, there’s often something happening on the weekends.
Or, if you’re ready to call it a night, head back to your cabin, enjoy a quiet evening, and save the exploring for tomorrow.
Saturday Morning: Coffee & a Slow Start
There’s no need to set an early alarm. It’s the weekend, after all!
Start your morning with a good cup of coffee from one of Williamson County’s locally owned coffee shops.
Crown Brew Coffee Co. in downtown Marion is a great stop for specialty coffee, espresso drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere.
You could also visit Velvet Moon Coffee Co. or head over to Herrin and try Guardian Grounds.
If you’re looking for a sit-down breakfast, The Vault Cafe on the Square in Marion is a fun place to start. Located inside a historic bank building, it’s a unique spot to enjoy breakfast before heading out for the day.
And here’s a little bonus for coffee lovers!
The 2026 Southern Illinois Coffee Trail runs through December 31, giving visitors the chance to explore locally owned coffee shops throughout the region. If you’re already planning to stop for coffee, you might as well make it part of the adventure!
Late Saturday Morning: Take the Scenic Route
Once you’ve had your coffee, it’s time to enjoy one of the best parts of fall in Southern Illinois: the scenery.
Williamson County is home to some beautiful outdoor areas, and you don’t have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy them.
Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is one of our favorite recommendations for a fall outing. With thousands of acres of forests, lakes, and wildlife habitat, it’s a beautiful place to spend a crisp autumn morning.
Take a scenic drive around Crab Orchard Lake, stop to enjoy the water, or explore one of the refuge’s walking trails.
If you’re in the mood for a hike, consider Rocky Bluff Trail or Bogard Point Trail. Both offer opportunities to get outside and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
Another beautiful option is Devil’s Kitchen Lake, known for its wooded surroundings and peaceful atmosphere.
Not much of a hiker? That’s perfectly fine!
Pack a warm drink, take a drive, stop for a few pictures, and enjoy the changing leaves. Sometimes that’s all you need.
Saturday Afternoon: Lunch & A Little Shopping
After a morning outdoors, head back into town for lunch and some shopping.
If you’re in Marion, Bennie’s Italian Foods is a longtime local option for a casual meal. You could also try M.A.’s Filipino Cuisine if you’re looking for something a little different.
Then spend some time exploring the local shops.
Downtown Marion is a great place to browse, especially if you enjoy boutiques, antiques, and unique gifts.
Check out Swanky Revel for boutique shopping, Milkweed Provisions for interesting finds, or Marion Antique Mall if you love hunting for vintage treasures.
You can also stop by Bits & Pieces Art & Antiques for a little art and antique browsing.
And don’t forget about the smaller communities!
Johnston City is another fun place to explore, especially if you enjoy antique stores and small-town shopping. Pickers Outlet Mall is worth adding to your list if you’re always looking for something unique.
There’s no rush to get through every store. Grab another coffee, wander around, and see what you find.
That’s part of the fun!
Saturday Evening: A Nice Dinner & Something Fun
After a full day of exploring, you’ve definitely earned a good dinner.
For a special evening, consider heading toward Carterville and spending some time at Walker’s Bluff Casino Resort.
It’s a great option for anyone wanting to turn dinner into a full evening out. Depending on what’s scheduled, you might catch a concert, enjoy some entertainment, or spend a little time at the casino.
The resort also offers lodging, making it an option for visitors who want to stay close to the evening activities.
If you’re interested in local wine, Williamson County has several places worth exploring.
Wichmann Vineyard and Clad & Cordon Vineyard are two options to look into when planning your visit. Check their current tasting hours and availability before heading out.
Prefer something more casual?
Head back toward Marion for dinner and drinks, or see who’s playing live music at one of the area’s local bars and restaurants.
If you’re traveling with kids, or just want something different, ThrillHouse in Marion is another option. With bowling, arcade games, go-karts, laser tag, and more, it’s an easy way to add a little excitement to your evening.
Whatever you choose, make sure to check the visitSI event calendar before your trip. You never know what concert, performance, or special event might be happening while you’re here!
Sunday Morning: Breakfast & One Last Stop
Sunday mornings are made for taking it easy.
Before packing up and heading home, grab breakfast at a local cafe or make one more coffee stop.
If you haven’t visited The Vault Cafe yet, Sunday morning is a great opportunity.
You could also take a little drive through Herrin, Carterville, or Johnston City and explore somewhere you didn’t have time for on Saturday.
If the weather is nice, consider one last outdoor stop.
Arrowhead Lake in Johnston City is a peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors, while Little Grassy Lake offers another scenic setting for a quiet morning.
Or head back toward Crab Orchard Lake for one last look at the fall colors before making your way home.
There’s something nice about ending a weekend with a little fresh air and nowhere in particular to be.
Make the Weekend Your Own

You can plan a romantic getaway, bring the whole family, or gather a few friends for a weekend away.
And while fall is an especially beautiful time to visit, many of these local favorites are worth exploring throughout the year.
