Exploring Rocky Bluff Trail

The Rocky Bluff Trail is situated within the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, close to Marion, Illinois. This refuge is renowned for its opportunities for fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and wildlife observation. Spanning the refuge are six distinct hiking trails, among which the Rocky Bluff Trail stands out for its access to some of the most picturesque features, such as wet weather waterfalls, cliffs, and vibrant wildflowers. The Rocky Bluff Trail offers a serene escape into nature.

This 1.8-mile loop hike is relatively easy. The trail begins by crossing a bridge directly over one of the waterfalls, offering a quick assessment of its current flow. These waterfalls at Rocky Bluff rely heavily on rainfall and are often short-lived in their flow. For the best view of Rocky Bluff Falls, standing at 40 feet tall, visit shortly after rainfall. The bluff line adorned with these falls creates a breathtaking scene, offering the most spectacular scenery in the refuge.

Aside from the waterfall, hikers can admire sandstone cliffs and encounter a variety of wildlife throughout the trail. Over 60 species of wildflowers bloom abundantly here, adding beautiful colors to the forest landscape.

The parking area accommodates only a limited number of vehicles. You’ll find a trail sign and a map displaying both short and long loop options. Some choose to save the waterfalls for the last part of their hike along the full loop.

1.8-mile loop hike, though relatively easy, is not accessible for strollers or those with disabilities. Visitors must obtain a $2.00 daily use tag from the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge Headquarters at 8588 Rt. 148, Marion, Illinois, to access the trail. Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash.

For those interested in fishing or hunting, public access points and Devil’s Kitchen Lake are conveniently located nearby.

Along the path, you’ll encounter a waterfall where the trail crosses over. Just before this crossing, a shortcut trail veers off to the left, while the main route continues straight ahead.

After crossing the creek above the falls, the path continues through the woods and intersects with the Wild Turkey Trail.

Turn left and follow this path until the Rocky Bluff Trail veers left again. Both intersections are clearly marked with signs and maps, ensuring you stay on track.

As you continue, the trail only improves, offering an overlook of the creek below and passing through a diverse landscape adorned with so many varieties of blooming flowers. There are also numerous natural cave shelters along the trail.

Towards the trail’s end, it crosses a stream just below the second waterfall. Timing your visit shortly after heavy rainfall enhances the experience, revealing this waterfall in its breathtaking splendor.

Whether you’re seeking a tranquil hike surrounded by natural beauty or planning outdoor activities like hunting or fishing, the Rocky Bluff Trail promises a memorable experience in every season.
