But don’t pack away the sunscreen just yet!

There is still time to squeeze in one more summer adventure, and you don’t have to travel far to make it happen. Whether you are planning a quick family trip, a weekend with friends, or a relaxing getaway for two, Williamson County has everything you need for one last summer weekend.

Here’s how we would spend it!

Friday Evening: Arrive, Unpack & Eat Local

Start your weekend by checking into one of Williamson County’s many hotels, cabins, campgrounds, or vacation rentals. You can stay close to the action in Marion, find a cozy place tucked among the trees, or wake up near the water at Lake of Egypt or Crab Orchard Lake. Once you’re settled in, it’s time for dinner. Williamson County has no shortage of locally owned restaurants, so this is the perfect opportunity to try somewhere new. From casual favorites and barbecue to Mexican food, pizza, steaks, and fine dining, there is something for every appetite.

After dinner, keep the evening going with live music, a drink at a local pub, or a quiet drive as the sun begins to set. No need to rush…you have the whole weekend ahead of you! Check out some great local restaurants: Local Flavors

Saturday Morning: Coffee First

Every good weekend should begin with coffee.

Grab breakfast and choose a stop along the Southern Illinois Coffee Trail. Try a new drink, pick up a pastry, and take a few minutes to plan the day. If you’re participating in the trail, don’t forget to check in while you’re there! Here are all of the great places to grab coffee in the area: Southern Illinois Coffee Trail

Then, head outside before the afternoon heat rolls in.

Late Morning: Make a Splash

Nothing says summer quite like a day near the water. Williamson County is home to beautiful lakes and plenty of ways to enjoy them.

Spend the morning fishing at Crab Orchard Lake, launch a kayak, rent a pontoon, or simply slow down and enjoy the view. Lake of Egypt is another great choice for boating, paddling, and soaking up the last few weeks of lake season.

Not interested in getting on the water? Pack a picnic, explore a scenic walking path, or find a peaceful spot to enjoy the fresh air. Sometimes the best part of a weekend getaway is doing absolutely nothing for a while.

Saturday Afternoon: Cool Off Indoors

When the temperature starts climbing, take the fun inside.

ThrillHouse is packed with activities, including bowling, arcade games, laser tag, go-karts, mini golf, and more. You could easily spend the entire afternoon there, especially if everyone in your group wants to try something different.

You can also cool down at The HUB Recreation Center, go skating, visit an escape room, or browse some of the area’s antique stores and locally owned boutiques. It’s a great way to escape the heat while still making the most of the day.

And honestly, a little shopping never hurts!

Saturday Night: Dinner & Something Fun

After a full day of exploring, you’ve definitely earned a good meal.

Choose a local restaurant for dinner, then see where the evening takes you. Catch some live music, go bowling, enjoy a locally made drink, or hit up Walkers Bluff Casino! Check the visitSI event calendar to see what is happening around Williamson County during your stay.

If you would rather keep things quiet, pick up dessert and head back to your cabin or vacation rental. A late-summer evening spent outside with good food and good company is hard to beat.

Sunday Morning: Take It Slow

There is no reason to rush home.

Start Sunday with breakfast or brunch, then spend a little time exploring one of Williamson County’s downtown areas. Browse local shops, look for murals, visit a park, or take one last scenic drive before checking out.

If you have time, stop at the Williamson County Historical Museum, walk part of the Crab Orchard Greenway, or return to your favorite place from Saturday. Sometimes a weekend’s best discovery is the spot you weren’t planning to find.

Summer Isn’t Over Yet

You don’t need an elaborate vacation or a packed schedule to make a few more summer memories. Sometimes all it takes is a short drive, a change of scenery, and permission to slow down for a couple of days.

So gather your family, call your friends, or plan a quick getaway for two. Spend some time on the lake, eat somewhere local, try something new, and enjoy one last summer weekend in Williamson County.
