The Fair is happening NOW in Williamson County!

There is just something about fair week that feels like summer in Southern Illinois.

The carnival lights, the smell of funnel cakes, livestock in the barns, live music, pageants, motorsports, and families walking around together all make the Williamson County Illinois Fair one of the area’s favorite traditions.

The 2026 fair takes place August 8–15 at the Williamson County Fairgrounds in Marion, with a full week of activities for all ages.

Whether you visit every year or are planning your first trip, here are a few of the things you can look forward to.

Kick Off Fair Week at the Car Show

Fair week gets rolling with the annual Williamson County Fair Car Show on Saturday, August 8.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., judging starts at noon, and awards are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Visitors can walk around the grounds, check out the vehicles, talk with their owners, and enjoy a relaxed start to the week.

Even if you are not a serious car person, it is still fun to see the restored classics, custom vehicles, and local favorites gathered in one place.

Cheer on the Pageant Contestants

The Queen Scholarship Pageant takes place at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, at the grandstand.

Contestants from around Williamson County will take the stage for interviews and evening-gown portions as they compete for the opportunity to represent the fair. The fair also traditionally includes children’s pageant activities, making pageant day a big part of the week for many local families.

For the contestants and their families, it is about much more than a crown. It is a chance to build confidence, make memories, and be part of a long-running local tradition.

Spend an Evening at the Carnival

Once the rides start moving and the lights come on, the fairgrounds completely change.

Kids can head toward the smaller rides and games, while older children and adults can try something a little faster. Even when you are not riding, it is fun to walk around the midway, listen to the music, and watch everyone trying to win a giant stuffed animal.

A fair night is also the perfect excuse to grab a lemonade, take too many photos, and stay out a little later than usual.

Come Hungry

There really is no point in pretending fair food is not one of the main attractions.

This is the week to order the funnel cake, eat something on a stick, and follow it with a cold lemonade. Depending on the vendors, you may find favorites like corn dogs, fries, barbecue, walking tacos, roasted corn, cotton candy, ice cream, and plenty of fried desserts.

The best plan is to come hungry and share a few things so you can try more than one.

Feel the Excitement at the Grandstand

The fair’s Facebook page is also promoting an action-packed track event for Monday, August 10, giving visitors another reason to spend a night at the grandstand. Ticket information was expected to be announced separately.

Grandstand nights bring a different kind of energy to the fair. The noise, excitement, and cheering crowd make these events especially popular with families and groups of friends.

Listen to Live Music

There will also be several nights of live music during fair week.

The current lineup includes:

Fire & Ice on Wednesday, August 12, from 6:00–9:00 p.m.
Shannon Arview on Thursday, August 13, from 6:00–9:00 p.m.
Cody Galloway on Friday, August 14, from 6:00–8:00 p.m.
Whiskey & Rust on Saturday, August 15, from 7:00–11:00 p.m.

The lineup includes a mix of country, rock, classic favorites, and modern hits, so there should be something for just about everyone.

Grab some food, find a place to sit, and enjoy a summer night of local live music.

Do Not Skip the Livestock Barns

The rides and entertainment may get most of the attention, but the livestock barns are still one of the most important parts of a county fair.

Young exhibitors spend months caring for their animals and getting ready to show them. Walking through the barns gives visitors a closer look at that work and at the agricultural traditions that remain an important part of Southern Illinois.

Children especially enjoy seeing the animals up close, and it is an easy way to add something educational to the day without making it feel like a lesson.

Make It a Day in Marion

Visitors coming from outside the area can easily turn a fair trip into a full day or weekend in Williamson County.

Start with breakfast or coffee at a local business, do a little shopping, and then head to the fairgrounds when the afternoon or evening activities begin. After fair week, there is still plenty nearby to explore, including local restaurants, lakes, trails, entertainment, and downtown attractions.
